Important Group Benefits Update for Alberta Employees - October 1, 2026

Changes are coming to group benefits plans in Alberta effective October 1, 2026, following the passage of Bill 11.
Two key changes employers and plan sponsors should be aware of:
🔹 Drug and health benefits for actively employed members can no longer be reduced or discontinued solely because of age.
🔹 For certain services, Alberta's provincial coverage for seniors aged 65+ and members of the Alberta Non-Group Coverage program will become the payor of last resort — meaning eligible private group benefits coverage will pay first.
For employers with plan members living in Alberta, these changes could result in higher claims being paid through the group benefits plan and may affect future plan costs and renewal pricing.
Even if your organization isn't based in Alberta, the changes may still be relevant if you have employees living in the province.
At Regroup Beyond Benefits, we help employers understand legislative changes and what they may mean for their benefits program, costs and employees.
