What is a Non-Evidence Maximum (NEM)?

A Non-Evidence Maximum (NEM) is the maximum amount of insurance coverage you are approved for without having to provide medical evidence or complete additional health questionnaires or forms.

Why Apply for Coverage Over the NEM?

Enhancing your coverage ensures greater financial protection for you and your family if you are unable to work due to illness or injury on or off the job.

Benefits include:

  • Peace of mind – higher financial security if you experience a disability.

  • Flexibility – choose coverage that better reflects your income and lifestyle.

  • Support for your family – maintain stability during unexpected time away from work.

Important Information

  • If you pay for your LTD premiums, your monthly cost will be adjusted based on your new insurance amount, up to your plans maximum benefit.

  • The new amount is automatically calculated according to your salary, up to the plan maximum. You are not selecting extra “coverage amounts”, it is all or nothing—you are applying to determine if you qualify for coverage above the Non-Evidence Maximum (NEM).

  • Rates remain unchanged from the renewal; however, as your coverage amount increases, your premium will increase accordingly & adjust at the next renewal.

  • The effective date cannot be earlier than the date you sign and submit your application.

Who Is Eligible?

• Your coverage increases with your salary and no medical tests or health questionnaires are required—up to your plans NEM limit.

• Some insurers may request medical evidence if your salary increases by more than a certain percentage or dollar amount (typically over 25% & $500) but remains below the NEM.

• Once you reach the NEM, any employees can apply.

How to Apply

  1. Review your current coverage to see if you are being cut off at the plans NEM.

  2. Complete the statement of health form usually found on the insurers website or your HR can provide to you.

  3. Submit your form directly to your insurer by email or if they have a document submission, on the member site.

  4. Don’t submit to your company’s HR as they don’t want to know your personal health information.

  5. Your updated coverage will take effect on the next eligible billing date.
